How quickly an electric motor project can move from contract award to delivery is demonstrated by one of the most recent orders secured by Traktionssysteme Austria (TSA).

In July 2024, TSA – the world market leader in the development and production of electromechanical drive systems for rolling stock and commercial road vehicles, headquartered in Wiener Neudorf, Austria – was awarded the contract by Plasser & Theurer to develop 14 powerful and compact TME 42-32-4 electric motors. By March 2025, the first units had already been delivered.

In summer 2024, TSA was awarded a significant contract to supply more than 100 traction motors of type TMR 31A-39-4 for 25 new five-section low-floor trams being manufactured by Turkish rolling stock producer Bozankaya. The trams will soon serve public transport passengers in the Serbian capital.
Each of the 25 trams will be equipped with four TSA traction motors. The first units have already been delivered and by the end of July 2025, the initial two vehicles now have been presented in Belgrade.

Following the milestone of producing its 5,000th electric motor for Wiener Linien in October 2024, TSA has reached another historic achievement: the completion of its 10,000th TMR 36-18-4 motor for the URBOS tram platform, manufactured by Spanish rolling stock company CAF.

What sets this motor apart is its design, which is specifically tailored to the low-floor chassis requirements of CAF URBOS trams. In a unique back-to-back configuration, two of these motors are bolted together on the non-driven end (NDE) and drive the wheels via angle gearboxes. This single-wheel drive concept enables precise control and enhances the vehicle’s efficiency.

With the order from MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) to Spanish CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, S.A.), the new LRVs on the Green Line in Boston are now once again being modernized. Traktionssysteme Austria makes a significant contribution to the renewal of the tram fleet with the delivery of 1,632 single motors which will be used as double motors. With the contract won in 2024, the delivery of the electric motors will begin in 2025 and extend over 5 years.

A total of 76 new Civity Battery Electrical Multiple Unit (BEMU) regional trains, manufactured by CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, S.A.), will be operational in the rail networks of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VVR) and Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NLW) in Germany. What sets these BEMU vehicles apart is their ability to operate on both electrified sections via catenaries and on non-electrified sections using batteries. Traktionssysteme Austria will supply a total of 310 electric motors for these battery-electric regional trains. Lines RE 44, RB 31, and RB 36 are expected to commence operations in December 2026, with the remaining lines gradually following suit until December 2028.

TSA alternators power train at Huawei Technology Campus in China

Traktionssysteme Austria (TSA) was awarded by Voith Turbo to design and deliver asynchronous alternators for the Voith RailPack for a vehicle project in southern China. The vehicle design is reminiscent of the well-known Jungfraubahn Railway in Switzerland. Our robust 375kW alternators complete the Voith RailPack 400DE/500DE, the most modern and efficient diesel motor in its class. The alternators generate the electrical power for Stadler Rail’s new rolling stock.

Another milestone achieved – 10,000 motors produced in Hyderabad

The development of the Western Sydney metropolitan area is a major concern of the government of New South Wales, Australia. The Parramatta Light Rail is one of the flagship mobility projects in Sydney spanning 12 kilometers and 16 stops. The new double-track tram line will connect Carlingford to Westmead and Camellia through Parramatta’s Central Business District. An estimated 130,000 people will be able to reach the stops by walk, and by 2026 around 28,000 passengers are expected to use the Parramatta Light Rail on a daily basis.

Investing through tough times – TSA strengthens its headquarters in Wiener Neudorf with 10 M EUR

Traktionssysteme Austria (TSA) is sustainably investing in Lower Austria – even during hard times. Investments amounting approximately 10 MEUR are intended to secure long-term competitiveness and production at the site in Wiener Neudorf.

After optimizing the rotor production by around 1 MEUR in 2020 (lead time could be reduced by more than 50%), the next milestone has now been reached: The new Stator Line – the part of the manufacturing site where the mechanical processing of the stators takes place – was officially put into operation. TSA’s CEO Robert Tencl as well as guest of honor, former co-CEO and shareholder Günter Eichhübl, officially opened the new welding robot facility as the centerpiece of the project.

New rail monitoring vehicle platform by Končar in Croatia is to be equipped with tsa motors

The Croatian state-owned railway infrastructure operator HŽ Infrastruktura d.o.o. has selected Končar Electric Vehicles Inc. to deliver a new rail monitoring car for the analysis of railway tracks in Croatia. Končar Electric Vehicles Inc. awarded Traktionssysteme Austria (TSA) in 2021 for the delivery of the electrical traction motors for the new designed rail measuring vehicle.

TSA wins order for traction motors for the new AB Transitio fleet in Sweden

TSA was contracted by CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, S.A.) to design and manufacture traction motors for 28 regional trains. The vehicles are part of the Civity Nordic platform and are designed to operate in extreme weather conditions from -40ºC to +40ºC. The Swedish company AB Transitio ordered 20 EMUs (electric units) and 8 BMUs (biodiesel-electric bimodal units) from CAF. The trains are intended for operation in 4 regions in Sweden.

Based on the success of the previous years at the Vienna Business Run, we have again registered numerous participants for this years’ 20thanniversary. 33 runners grabbed their team jerseys and running equipment to show what they have been training for the last couple of months. The TSA Runners Community came together in the TSA party tent before, and especially after the run to exchange their personal experience and emotions with snacks and cool drinks. We will participate again in 2022 and are looking forward to seeing many names on the registration list. Berlin, here we come! TSA wins significant order for electric motors of new metro

Traktionssysteme Austria (TSA) from Wiener Neudorf was engaged to develop and construct the new electric motor generation for the project ‘Metro Berlin – Series J/JK’! This is one of the largest supply contracts ever awarded in Europe.

The contract with the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) includes up to 1,500 metro cars. 4,500 motors will be manufactured and delivered for this project within the next 10 years. An additional agreement was concluded for spare parts for the following 32 years.

Over the last couple of months, we have discussed the structure, strategy and content of our new website in almost countless meetings and video calls. We designed layouts, wrote and rewrote texts, researched matching images and finally combined everything into a perfect unit. Now we have an even more modern and user-friendly site than before.
