Climate protection is ingrained in TSA’s DNA
‘Various initiatives led by the Austrian government, such as Mission 11, aim to increase awareness about climate-related issues among the population‘, stated Robert Tencl, CEO of Traktionssysteme Austria. ‘However, the responsibility does not solely lie with individuals. Industrial companies also have a duty to facilitate this shift towards a healthier environment‘.
As the leading manufacturer of electromechanical drives for both rolling stock and road commercial vehicles, TSA is dedicated to sustainable practices. The company consistently invests in projects and process optimizations aimed at reducing CO2 emissions.
In February 2024, the new photovoltaic system at TSA’s facility in Wiener Neudorf, Lower Austria, was successfully commissioned. With a total capacity of 472.32 kWp and 1152 photovoltaic panels installed, the system can now fulfill 10.3% of the required electricity demand. To provide perspective, 1 kWp can yield approximately 1,000 kWh of solar power annually, necessitating about 6 to 7 m2 of roof space. Assuming a 4-person household consumes between 2,600 and 5,000 kWh of electricity per year, the electricity generated by TSA’s photovoltaic system could sustain between 90 and 180 households. For 2-person households, it could sustain between 134 and 236 families.
Traktionssysteme Austria – A sustainable company in Lower Austria
‘Sustainability is deeply ingrained in our products‘, added Tencl. ‘Environmental protection and combating climate change are paramount for TSA. We not only recognize our responsibility to future generations but also aim to make a tangible contribution to ensuring a clean planet for tomorrow‘.
The commissioning of the photovoltaic system was just one of the numerous environmentally-oriented projects outlined in Traktionssysteme Austria’s strategy until 2030. In addition to developing the site into a sustainable ‘TSA City’ in Wiener Neudorf, ongoing efforts are being made to optimize production and corporate processes. Thus, environmental protection is genuinely embraced within an industrial company, making a significant contribution to the fight against climate change.
Expansion of photovoltaic systems is necessary to achieve climate goals
During the annual UN Climate Conference, global climate objectives are established. At the latest gathering in Dubai in 2023, decision makers from over 190 countries reached a consensus on a worldwide phasing out of all fossil fuels. Simultaneously, nations were urged to double energy efficiency and triple renewable energy capacities by 2030.
The Austrian government has established explicit climate targets, with the aim of ceasing greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and meeting 100% of gross electricity consumption from renewable sources by 2030. Achieving this necessitates the expansion of photovoltaic and wind power. Alongside the widespread utilization of hydropower in Austria, these two technologies still hold the greatest potential for scaling up green energy production to meet required levels. Traktionssysteme Austria is also dedicated to ecological initiatives and has taken a stride toward a sustainable strategy until 2030 with the deployment of the new photovoltaic system.
