The development of the Western Sydney metropolitan area is a major concern of the government of New South Wales, Australia. The Parramatta Light Rail is one of the flagship mobility projects in Sydney spanning 12 kilometers and 16 stops. The new double-track tram line will connect Carlingford to Westmead and Camellia through Parramatta’s Central Business District. An estimated 130,000 people will be able to reach the stops by walk, and by 2026 around 28,000 passengers are expected to use the Parramatta Light Rail on a daily basis.
The Spanish manufacturer of rolling stock CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) is supplying thirteen 7-module Urbos LRVs with 45 meters in length each. The Urbos vehicles are the most innovative generation of CAF streetcars. They will be powered by Traktionssysteme Austria‘s (TSA) proven electric motors with a dual propulsion system (electric and battery-powered). The Parramatta Light Rail is scheduled to enter service in mid-2024. Other Urbos vehicles with traction motors by TSA have been successfully operating in many countries such as Norway, Spain, Estonia and Israel.
