Train 18, India´s first EMU-vehicle with TSA newest drive technology was launched on October 29, 2018 by Chennai´s ICF (Integral Coach Factory). In a festive inauguration ceremony with high Indian representatives, Train 18 was presented to the public. It will replace the existing Shatabdi Express and has the potential to reach a speed up to 160 km/h, cutting down the travel time by 10-15%.
Traktionssysteme Austria in Wiener Neudorf designed the motor and gear for the new vehicle type. Following a Transfer of Technology, the drive components were wholly manufactured by TSA´s Joint Venture Medha Traction Equipment Private Limited (MTEPL) in Hyderabad. With figures showing a 80% local share of production as a part of the Make in India initiative by Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, Train 18 is representing a great success for Indian Railways and ICF Chennai.
