Following a purchase order by the Spanish vehicle manufacturer CAF, Traktionssysteme Austria will deliver 344 URBOS motors for 37 tramways. After a long tender process the Hungarian public transport services Budapesti Közlekedési Központ, BKK (Centre for Budapest Transport) has selected CAF´s URBOS low-floor vehicle. BKK has announced an upgrade option to expand to 87 vehicles, while two of which have already been reported to CAF.
Budapesti Közlekedési Központ was convinced of the vehicle´s design and its technical features, especially of the possibility of a catenary-free operation in the historic city center of Budapest. 12 vehicles will be arranged with 9 components and will be capable of carrying up to 562 passengers. The 9-unit train with a lenght of 56 meters will be one of the longest tramway vehicles in the world.
